Hi! I am Alli, the gal behind Gather & Dwell. I’m a 24-year-old southerner who was born and raised in sweet, sweet Tennessee. I’m married to a complete stud named Brad, who is a worship pastor and kitchen designer. (Basically, he is oozing with talent.) He caught my eye with his voice and guitar, but he wins me over daily with his smile, patience and graciousness. I’m a momma to two fur brothers, Coop & Finn, who are sometimes stinky but always loveable and fun. Here we are hanging out in our favorite place… our front porch!
(How we managed to snap a picture with both pups somewhat looking at the camera, I will never know.)
We live in the historic district of our town in an adorable Victorian home that was built in 1901. Living in an older home has always been a dream of ours. The creaky floors and crown molding makes our house a home. I have always been obsessed with art and DIY projects, but my passion for home design has my heart. My hope is that Gather and Dwell will be a place where you will feel empowered to make your house a home and as beautiful as you dream. I wish to inspire you, but to also encourage you to embrace your own unique creativity! (Disclaimer: Blogging is completely new to me, so thank you for joining me here as we tackle some fun projects together!) Now that you know me, let’s talk design.
Fall is here and my home is happier for it. My birthday is in October, so naturally Fall is my favorite season. For me, Fall represents gratefulness and change, and I love celebrating the season with my home. I always start by decorating my front porch. This year, I wanted to keep it simple and neutral to let my dark-wooded front door shine (and I think she does). This is what I’ve come up with so far:
Almost everything on my porch is a DIY project, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. To be honest, my porch most likely won’t look like this come November (or maybe even next week for that matter). I love to add, take away and re-arrange. But for now, this small touch of Fall is exactly what my porch needs to ease into the new season!
3 simple tips on how to decorate your Front Porch for Fall
Reuse and repurpose things that you already have in your home. For example, the tin bucket pictured is usually holding logs in my living room during Winter, but during Fall it’s home to tiny, painted pumpkins. Also, those cute mums on the hay bale aren’t in a “real” pot. I purchased the cheapest mums that rest in plastic pots (you know, the ones you can get for $3 at Walmart). I placed a water catcher (what are those things really called anyway?) under the mums and painted the plastic pot a flat black. (Money saver!) Remember, decorating doesn’t have to be pricy; it’s the creative use of space that makes it unique and stunning.
Work with the layout of your porch. The front door to my home is not centered. It sits to the right, leaving most of our front porch space to the left. For me, I tend to place more décor to the left of the door. If your door and steps are centered, then symmetry can be your friend by decorating both sides of your porch.
Use color and natural elements. Color can make a huge statement. It draws the eye and can create massive appeal. Whether you are playing with a specific scheme or just using varying shades of one color, using natural elements will bring texture to your space. And the best part is, it can be found in your yard! Twigs, leaves and berries can all add an extra special touch and overall “realness” to your front porch!
I hope this helps you create a fun, Fall-ish front porch that you can gather & dwell in!
