5 Easy Tips to Make Your Home Feel like Summer

Has time slipped by so quickly that your home still feels as if it’s decorated for Christmas? (It’s ok...I found a frosted pinecone under the loveseat last week. True story.) Well, I’ve got your back with these five quick and easy tips to make your home feel more like summer!

1. Use candles
To me, there’s nothing more refreshing than a summer scented candle. My nose tends to associate summer with very clean, beachy, and sweet scents. My favorites that I’ve found this season are from the oh-so-wonderful Target. Bella’s Island Moonlight Candle ($10) smells exactly like the beloved Blue Volcano Candle, but is way more affordable. The Signature Soy’s Beach House Candle ($10) can also transport you right to the sandy shore when lit. The smell reminds me so much of the beach -- salt, sand, seagulls and all! It’s a total (and subtle) tone-setter for your home.

2. Bring the Outside In
Summer is the perfect time to step outside for some fresh goodies to decorate your home. Utilizing blooms from your garden or supporting local shops and vendors by purchasing stems at the Farmer’s Market can brighten up any room. (Even the bathroom!) If you’d rather decorate with more greenery and less flowers, I say go for that, too—it’s just as beautiful!

3. Go White (or Light) with Linens
I’m a big believer in this tip even though I feel like I cheat with it a bit because my house is all white all year-round! But seriously, going white and bright (light neutrals included) for the season can be as easy as adding new throw blankets and pillows to your couch! If you have slipcovers on your sofa, consider switching them out during the warmer months to white or beige. If you have a heavy and/or darker toned comforter on your bed, give your body a break from the heat, and trade it out for a light-colored quilt. Already have a ton of pillows around the house? Order some inexpensive pillow slipcovers from Ikea and H&M, and no one will ever know the difference! Secret time: the white pillow pictured below is actually a red and white striped Christmas pillow that I cover when springtime rolls around. Christmas cheer and spring fever all in one little pillow!

4. Use Blue and Green Accent Pieces
(This tip may be the easiest of all, but don’t let it limit your design creativity if you already have a set theme throughout your home.) Brightly colored accent pieces can add little touches of summer to any room. If you are working from a blank slate, consider adding blue and green to represent the feeling of the foliage and water to bring calmness and simplicity to your space. Even sweet glass containers that can be found at your local thrift store can do the trick!

5. Decorate the Front Porch (...obviously!)
No matter the size of your porch, you can welcome guests with a sense of summer before they even step foot in the door! With the use of potted seasonal plants, a well-groomed lawn and the American Flag, your home’s exterior will scream, “Hey y’all! The folks that live here love and celebrate this time of year!”

“From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” Psalms 113:3, NIV

Think on this truth while sitting on your newly decorated porch this summer!
